Be a 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards judge

Judge preferred categories, from the comfort of your home, and earn professional growth credit

All Scholastic Writing Awards works are judged by a select panel of volunteer English language and media arts experts, each knowing nothing about the author during the judging process. YAA invites current or retired teachers, professors, writers, journalists, editors, members of community and youth groups, and other qualified experts to volunteer.

Judging submissions promotes student academic growth and facilitates extracurricular writing participation. Accordingly, 2016 YAA volunteer judges earned district credit for professional development and you can earn the same in 2017; it’s notable that professional development credit policies vary by district.

Each judge will:

  • choose your preferred art and writing categories to judge
  • do all training and judging online
  • have 3 weeks in January of 2017 to judge entries
  • get a professional development certificate for one hour (training) plus the number of hours you spend judging
  • be invited to the “2017 YAA Best Of Coffeehouse Social” in late January to meet peers, read Gold and Silver Key-winning works, and help select Arizona’s five “American Voices nominees” for 2017 in art and writing.
